HUB CLUB

At our last reunion committee meeting meeting back in 2000 I admitted to the planning group I did not know what HUB CLUB stood for when we were in school. I attended the HUB CLUB dances but never knew what it stood for. Most of the committee did not know either so I thought I would forward this information. When NORTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL was built it united HAVELOCK, UNIVERSITY PLACE, and BETHANY which were independent communities at the time. Thus H-U-B was the acronym for the three small locations, which were combined for one major High School. Maybe the reunion committee is just made up of dummies because Dr. Robert Stallings and myself did not catch onto why the PENGUINS were named as they were (Black & White).

40 Years In A Nutshell

I accept the challenge--to put nearly 40 years of life in an article without putting anyone to sleep. Met husband-to-be Jim (LHS class of '65) at NE Kings in '64, married in Aug. 66, lived in London for 5 years. Had a son and daughter. Moved around a lot. I finally got a Bachelor's degree in Business in '85 and a Masters in Counseling in '96 (late bloomer I guess). In '89 we moved to Germany where we lived for 14 years.

I worked for the Univ. of Maryland European Division during that time. I traveled a lot in my job, and that's the thing I miss most now that I'm retired. U of M sent me all over Europe, and the Mid-east, including Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Iceland, Hungary, Belgium, The Netherlands, Italy, Spain, England, Egypt, and Bahrain, as I was responsible for training the approximately 155 Field Reps.

In the autumn of '03 we moved from Germany to England and now live in the same part of London we lived in 35 years ago--the northwest corner of the Greater London Area.

Our kids live in the States but we get together as often as we can. Our son Jason will start medical school this August, and our married daughter Gwendolyn is working on her bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation. (They are 33 and 30--late bloomers I guess.) Our son-in-law Andy is from Brazil and is currently in Iraq with the US Army, and my husband, Jim is a chaplain.

That's about it, except to say that the older I get, the more sentimental I get about old friends and acquaintances, so I hope that many will contribute to this newsletter and Website. (If anyone emails me, please put your name in the subject, as I don't open emails from addresses I don't recognize.) Cheers.

I hope you enjoyed your nap.

Jim McKee, Nebraska Historian

Jim McKee has a weekly article in the Lincoln Journal about historical events, buildings and Nebraskans. He also teaches two classes in the winter 1) The Lincoln Suburbs 2) The History of Lincoln. I have lived in Nebraska most of my 56 years (have traveled to five continents and 18 countries) but I did not know many of the things Jim lectured about during his class last winter. For example, the Woods Brothers purchased the patent and received royalties from every rotary dial phone sold in the WORLD when it was first introduced. Anyway, Jim also attends reunions when he is available. He has two programs which EVERYONE says is outstanding. The most interesting is WHERE WOULD YOU HAVE GONE ON A DATE, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE, AND HOW MUCH WOULD IT HAVE COST BACK IN 19__? (1965). I have invited him to attend our reunion in 2005. Even though he graduated from NORTHEAST in the late 50's, and has close ties with all of Lincoln, he might be traveling in Europe during our scheduled reunion. If he is in town he will be there and we will let you know. It might be worth the trip just to hear his talk. Deano Knight.

Since several of you have emailed me and said that you don't remember me, I wanted to place my bio here in the newsletter. But as usual it was too wordy and would not fit, so I put it on a web page. If you would like to read it, click on the "Steve Gergens - Who's he?" link on the home page. It's not real interesting but it's there if you want to glance at it. Steve

DEEP THOUGHTS by Deano

Even though they are self adhesive now and we don't have to go thru the intense labor of licking stamps it takes a lot of effort to get a reunion together (and I don't do any of the work). In 2000 about ten of us met on a regular basis to coordinate the reunion. I think fewer than 90 (16%) of our class attended. I think that is even less efficient than the Government. In a couple of weeks the "Committee" will meet again to prepare for the 2005 reunion. We would appreciate ANY feed back!

Some schools have combined their efforts in recent times, or as Warren Buffett said at his shareholders meeting last week "Merged their assets". What would you think of combining our 1965 Northeast reunion with Southeast, Lincoln High, Pius, University High's classes of 1965?

Deano

My Short Biography

In August of 2004 my husband John and I will be starting our 37th year in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Occasionally I think about moving back to Lincoln, but we are pretty embedded in Oskaloosa. I still have a brother and sister-in-law in Lincoln so we get back there two or three times a year.

I retired from my position as library associate at Oskaloosa Senior High School in March of 2002 after 34 years with the school district. I still keep in touch with the librarian and last December I volunteered my expertise, err muscle, to help them move books to a new addition to the high school.

Artistic endeavors continue to be an important part of my life. I’ve been involved in the miniatures (scale) hobby for about 24 years. I create, collect and sell miniatures. I have belonged to the national organization since 1986 and the local club I started has been in existence since 1988. Attending a miniature show is always the highlight of the year for me.

When summer comes I spend a lot of time flower gardening. My main flour bed is 51’ by 31’. A good portion contains Iris and daylilies. Through my husband (track coach), I met Randy Wilson, who along with his two brothers, run a daylily farm in Knoxville, Iowa. Randy teaches and coaches track. He was the national 800-meter champion at the hated University of Oklahoma. He is well qualified to coach track since he qualified for the Olympics the year we boycotted. I have purchased several plants from him. As much as I love flowers and working outside I am always ready for fall and winter. Actually I look forward to winter – more time for miniatures.

I’m still involved in our local humane society. A couple years ago my 17- year string as treasurer ended when I lost the election to a financial advisor. The secretary’s position was open and I was elected. It’s a small world – our current president is from Lincoln and went to Lincoln High.

For a little over a year now I have been doing volunteer work through my church, which includes two more secretarial jobs. I still enjoy reading, but don’t have much time. I try to squeeze in exercising about four times a week, but don’t enjoy it.

We also have four dingy cats to care for. Yes, dingy. We taught them to ring a bell for food and also the two before them. Two have learned to ring a bell when they want to go outside.

With all this to do I have little time left for motorcycling which my husband has been doing for over 30 years. I try to attend events close to Oskaloosa.
